Max Weber

Max Weber suggests that racial inequality deals with status and prestige. There are two different types of status in America; Achieved status which is a status that a person earns throughout their lifetime and ascribed status which is status that a person is born with. Status can lead to social differences which in return can lead to social inequality. Social inequality is a large determining factor when if comes to suicide because in many studies, results suggest that because of a certain race having unequal occupation and income levels, this leads to different suicide rates. Suicide is very important in society today. A reason for this is that in order for suicide to take place, there has to be some negative feelings involved. In our present society, inequality is a large factor leading to these negative feelings. Inequality leads to larger social gaps, which leads to exploitation of the lower class, which leads to people in the lower class feeling that they are less important than those of the upper class. In our case, certain races can be tied into the different social classes, therefore making a connection between social inequality and suicide rates. This is was I will focus my paper on.

As the results from this study show, suicide is very rare for both groups of Black males as well as for White males in the same age group. More that ¼ of the SMSAs reported no black male suicides. When focusing on income and occupation, the results find that as inequities in income and occupation increases, as does the probability of black male suicide (Burr et al 1999)

etween race and suicide. I examine the existing evidence on whether race has any impact of the outcome of suicide rates. As evidence for my paper, I use three different studies. These studies vary according to gender, but they all link to race and suicide in some way. I will state the used sample and report a brief summary for each of the studies.

In conclusion, my original research question dealt with the intersection of race and suicide. This should be researched targeting more occupation and income dealing with inequality of social class. My question was not fully answered because in the studies that I examined, the results were focused more toward the intersection of social inequality and suicide, rather than just race and suicide, therefore I will have to conclude that there is not solid link to the intersection of race and suicide.

The sample group was large enough that three subgroups could be made. The study’s results are based on these three groups, Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites. Gutierrez found that among Blacks, 9.3% had made suicidal threats, 3.1% had made a minor attempt, and 2.6% had made a serious attempt. Among Hispanics, 8% had threatened suicide, 5% had made minor attempts, and 4% had made serious attempts. Among Whites, 6% had threatened suicide, 3.7% had made minor attempts, and .7% had made serious attempts. Hispanics were found to have a greater history of self-harmful behavior than Whites. Blacks reported a stronger attraction to death than Whites. The completion rate of suicide for Blacks is almost half that of Whites (Gutierrez et al 1999). In other words, Blacks had the highest percentage when it came to threats but Hispanics had the highest percentage when it actually came down to making serious attempts.
