Shadow of a Vampire Story and Plot

In Shadow of a Vampire (Merhige, 2000) the film conveys its story with a chronological third person narration and a closed ending. The story relies on information given in the opening narrative caption, as well as some inferred elements. The plot is driven by a third person’s account of one director’s manifestation of a vampire film. The narrative form and closed ending of Shadow of a Vampire assists in portraying the story of a director’s passion for creation of film.

In the beginning of Shadow of a Vampire a caption is presented that gives the viewer information about the story. The caption is crucial to the story as important information is given and is relevant to the rest of the film. The caption provides us with a historical context and the subject matter, a director’s production of a film. Also, the protagonist of the film, the director, Murnau, is given a slight biography in the caption. In the caption, the German filmmaker, Murnau is said to have created the most realistic vampire movie of all time establishing him as one of the greatest directors of all time. Shadow of a Vampire’s opening scene plays into the information of the caption as the film begins in media res with a director acti

Shadow of a Vampire is a movie with a closed narration. Although there are still some unanswered questions, the central questions are answered. The film tells the story of how Murnau made his vampire movie. The central idea of creating such a film is answered and the subject matter that was Murnau’s incredible passion for his art is emphasized. Unanswered questions remain about who is responsible for the deaths of various cast and crew. Based on the captions at the beginning of the film, Murnau escaped blame and lived a life of filmmaking legend. The film’s content concerned filmmaking as an art and the vaiours shots of cameras support this. The ending is responsive to the two main elements of the content of the film. Throughout the film Murnau speaks of the art as film and as with the final scene there are many shots of filmmaking tools, the camera lens and actual film getting light exposed onto it. The second closing aspect is Murnau himself, who has taken over as director and camera operator, and there is a close shot of his eye just as in the films opening. The final words of the Shadow of a Vampire support the closed narration and reveal the true meaning of the story as it concerns with creation a movie, they are Murnau’s “I think we have it.”

Shadow of a Vampire is a chronological third person narrative, and is a restricted narrative to many story elements. As a rule it seems that we know less than Murnau but more than any of the other characters. Murnau has minimal restrictive knowledge of the events of the story; we as a viewer know only what the caption and plot can reveal to us. In some cases through Schreck we have an omniscient narration in that we know his intentions and it is not clear whether Murnau knows these things. When Schreck becomes so centered on “having”
