Charlie Chaplins
1. During WWII British and American film industries released many propaganda films portraying enemy soldiers as cowardly, allied soldiers as virtuous and civilians as patriotic. ÿ Although GD was released before WWII and while America was still neutral it was one such film. 2. Chaplin made the film to influence democratic opinion and to stand fast against fascist dictators because he was a committed anti-fascist, natural propagandist and political idealist determined to make the world see its problems from his point of view. Examples of this before and after GD include: ÿ Modern Times (1939) – which was aimed at showing the dehumanization of assembly-line workers. ÿ Monsieur Verdoux (1947) – which was a post-war pacifist film. 3. Appropriately enough shooting for the GD began the day Britain and France declared war on Germany. ÿ Criticism and worry began at the same time.
