The Mavericks Metamorphose the Masses

People have the choice to decide what road to take in life. Most humans choose to follow the path that society lays out for them. The few who do not, subconsciously or consciously, chose to take the Road Less Traveled. The difference between the two is that one is conforming to society’s beliefs and the other is not. A nonconformist is a person who does not integrate into society’s typically accepted way of thinking or actions. History has shown us that nonconformists of society are feared, hated, mocked, scowled at, and called insane. People have come up with many negative names to call nonconformists: heretic, bohemian, maverick, misbeliever, schismatic, apostate. Why do you suppose that people dislike change so much that they go so far as to create many different names to call people who don’t conform? Do you think that these people are in fear for their life, or the real subject they fear is a thing they do not understand? Either types of people, who grow up in a society that has a set of moral standards, do not want change or they just do not understand change. Therefore, this causes them to fear the unknown. We will observe three people, two of which are fictional characters who did not confo

Conformity is a simple task. As we have witnessed, nonconformity is not. Nonconformists have changed the views of people throughout history and are still changing people’s views today. We can see this all around in food, the media, school, work, and pretty much everything. It has not always been like it is now and, in the future, people and everything around them will change again, from affairs like acceptance of homosexuals to discoveries of mental illnesses to admiration of women who broke the boundaries so we don’t have to. People who throw down the goblet that society requires them to drink are the only people who put the masses in check. I want society to continually change, and grow for the better or the worse, for if there weren’t a single change in belief, customs, traditions, standards, then we should start the world over. All of the characters I used as examples were women; they all were being oppressed by the view of their time, and they all were looking for a way out of that oppression. They all have ventured into the unknown, and come out victorious, if not for themselves, for us. I feel overwhelming joy when I think about my time. We do not have to struggle in the ways these women had to break out of the spider web that was woven for them. I do know that, although there will be new issues, over time the next mavericks of society will have to metamorphose the masses again and again.

You can take a chocolate chip cookie and put holes in it and attach it to your ears and call it an earring, or hang it around your neck on a silver chain and pretend it’s a necklace-but it’s still a cookie. See-you can toss it in the air and call it a Frisbee or even a flying saucer, if the mood hits you, and it’s just still a cookie… Then all the pretending and hoopla is over with. And you know what you got?… A lesbian. (Page 50)

Nonconformists empower their surroundings by using their behavior as a tool to persuade people’s thoughts. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper, her husband and his sister take the narrator and her new baby to a rental house, so that she can recover from her condition. The husband is a physician and he is convinced that his wife has just a little nervous behavior. The
