Rarely does it happen that someone’s death would bring joy and happiness to another. In

Kate Chopin’s, “The Story of an Hour.” Mrs. Mallard’s husband was presumed dead, this

presumption had caused Mrs. Mallard to go through some mixed feelings and emotions. Many of

the emotions were that of relief to be disconnected to her husband. As soon as she heard the news

she was sad and a bit set free. “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin tells of a woman’s

discovery that no amount of love and security can pay for the lack of control over her own

existence. Mrs. Mallard, molded by society, looked to be the perfect wife. However, on the inside

she struggled with her marriage to Mr. Brently Mallard. Feminism shown through male

dominance and freedom explains this entire short story. “The Story of an Hour” can be clearly

understood through the idea of fate.

The period in which this story was set was a time in which most, if not all, women were

under the law or rule of their husband. During the 1800's women were not allowed to be a person

of their own, but was expected to or looked upon as a shadow of her hus
