Sundiata vs Odyssey

An epic poem can be defined as a long narrative poem which is centered on a heroic figure whose actions are legendary, historical and mythical. Epic poems have several major characteristics: they have very vast settings ,supernatural beings or Gods have a direct role in the poem, and they involve the hero being in battle or completing a long journey. Both Sundiata and The Odyssey show many characteristics of an epic poem, as well as examples of the Guest/ Host traditions.

The epic tale of Sundiata shows many different settings as it tells the story of Sundiata’s life and his rise to king. Though born in Mali, Sundiata traveled to many different places, including Djedba, Fouta Djallon, Ghana, and Mema, before becoming king. His extensive traveling gave Sundiata an opportunity to build allies to use against his enemy Soumaoro. Much like Sundiata, Odysseus traveled to many different places on his journey home to Ithaca. At each town Sundiata and his family relies on the guest/host traditions. The guest/ host traditions can also be called hospitality. Even if the King of a town refuses to let Sundiata live there permanently, he does so with courtesy and hospitality. Every King that Sundiata met gave food and shelter to him. For example, when Sundiata arrives at Ghana, the king there treats him and his family like royalty (Sundiata 119). The Odyssey also has examples of the Guest/Host traditions. Odysseus traveled the world for ten years, throughout those years he relied on the hospitality of others. In some instances Odysseus stayed with his host for years. Odysseus assumed that every one he visited would extend hospitality, which was untrue. When Odysseus told Alcinous his story he described the Cyclops creatures as being a rude and lawless folk.
