The latter A signifies many different things. The first thing that it signifies in the story is the word adultery. Second of all, she was a great price Hester gets mocked and humiliated every day and Pearl is all she has to show for her sin. Hester is not ashamed of what she has done though. The last symbols are the characters. Their names are very symbolic to how they act. Pearls name represents the treasure that Hester has and is such a high price. Dimsdale is just how his name sounds. As the story goes along he gets sick and starts to die. “Even the nature of Dimsdale's bodily disease”. (123) Chillingsworth is also a symbolic name.
