Creative Dance Lesson Plan

We have two main objectives in this lesson plan: Levels and Pathways. The children learn about what a high, medium and low level is by using examples of high, medium and low level sports. Pathways such as straight, circular, and zigzag, are the other main focus. In the lesson plan, students will demonstrate and give ideas about the different pathways they know of. A third, and minor objective is that of Relationships. Students will develop a relationship to the stimulus (maracas and cymbals) as well as to their peers through the warm up, lead up and main activities.
Using maracas as a stimulus, the students are asked to use their imaginations in giving their ideas about what the maracas sound like. After sharing their ideas, the students will spread out and find their own space. The students are free to move in any way they would like when the maracas are shaken. There are no specified rules for movement, other than safety precautions. When the maracas are shaken at different speeds, we are able to watch the students’ individual interpretations.

- Try moving backwards and following the leader.

The students are then asked if they are familiar with what pathways are. To help them better understand this concept, a student will be asked to demonstrate one in front of the class. Giving examples of different shapes, such as a circle, square, or triangle will be helpful. Again, using the maracas to change speed, we will allow the students to practice and use the concepts they have learned.
