From the moment Hester Prynne is introduced into the plot of The Scarlet Letter in chapter 2, "The Marketplace", the reader realizes she is very prideful and strong. As an adulteress, she is forced to endure ignominy from her peers and is sentenced to have the letter “A” sewn to her chest. When standing on the scaffold as punishment for her sins, she stands strong and tall, although her mind wanders off at times. Ultimately Hester shows her pride despite her ‘unforgiveable’ sin.

In conclusion, Hester Prynne was a strong woman who possessed a great deal of integrity and strength. She stayed a proud woman even in the face of public disgrace. From the outside, the scarlet A on her chest would seem like it did not do anything to hurt her pride. Hawthorne does not really go inside of Hester’s mind so we never really know what Hester felt internally. It is apparent that Hester did indeed feel the brand the letter put on her deep in her heart. At times it even seemed as like the ‘A’ had become a part of her. However, this did not affect how she carried herself. Hester Prynne always had a sense of pride, dignity, and self-respect that surrounded her being and told all who encountered her she was filled with probity.
