Gender Analysis

The women in both films Kandahar and The Colour Purple go through submissive stages in their lives. Many of the problems consist of social implications conducted by men and the leadership they have in their countries. Gender related issues such as Western laws in a black communities, dominance against women, forceful rituals preached in the act of respect towards men are a few links that are seen in both films.

The differentiations of gender in these films illustrate how far women today have come after the many decades they had struggled through. The Colour Purple is set in 1906 and displays how the women strive through the horrific domestic violence and how they became to understand their rites as women. Whereas the film Kandahar, the women are very submissive towards the men in their culture and society. Religious respect still occurs in 2001 when this film was produced. The impact men have towards the women in Afghanistan is too overwhelming and women find it hard even at the best time to stand up against them.

Male domination has always been an issue for all the women in the two different societies. Celie and Nettie from The Colour Purple, portray submissive notions towards their step-father. As violent as their step-


Male domination is the key issue that women in The Colour Purple and Kandahar have in common. Two different religions and cultures, yet very much they same with overpowering authority towards women in their communities. Social implications came about from these religious status’ and from foreign cultures. Domestic violence is seen as a normal everyday event in both these films. The strength of women together found a way to overpower the men in their lives and found a way out, either by leaving their household for the males to venge for themselves or even leaving the country all together. The women in these films, found that their rites should be valued and respected and with the help of other abused women in their communities they escaped to find happiness and freedom.

Religion plays an important role in social implications towards women. In both films, the religious faith sees God as a male figure and males interpret this as a role model for themselves. Islamic religion assists the social and domestic implications on women’s lives. As male orientated as Afghanistan is, the education system consists of only young boys.
