The Four Elements of Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is a successful culture that is well known across the world. Hip-Hop culture is made up of music, dance, art, poetry, language, and fashion. Its originators were inner city youths who needed to express themselves. Hip-Hop is now a multi-billion dollor industry that is recognized arpund the world, but is composed of four components. The four components are: deejaying, emceeing, breaking, and writing, these are known as the four elements of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop deejaying, scratching, or turntablism, is a complex art. Though in its simplest form it consisits of a pair of turntables, an audio mixer, and some orginal recordings. Through the use of deejaying techniques cutting, mixing, scratching, and sampling are used to create a new track from the original song. Deejaying origins are found throughout Jamaica in the 1950's and 1960's. This was a very innovative time for deejays. During this time the after beat, the rock steady beat, ska, dub, and reggae a;; were deleveloped during this time. In 1968 King Tubby created the Dub style by removing parts of the vocal track on the dub plate or acetate disc. This created a new version of the song that by todays standards would be known as a remix. Throughout the 196
0's, many Jamaicans immigrated to the United States and fgound themselves in the inner city New York. One if these immigrants was the legendary DJ Kool Herc. During the late1960's,he deejayed many parties where he would recite improvised rhymes over the instrumentals and breajs of the times most popular songs. Though most of the breaks were not long enoght to actually get a decent rhyme out, to correct this problem he used two copies of the same record on the turntables. He also used and audio mixer to switch between the two records, which allowed hin to loop the breaks as long as he wished. The techniques become known as the break beat, and thus deejaying was born. Throughout the 1970's abd 1980's deejaying techques improved even more and thud become more sophisticated, hand in hand the music and technology improved together. Despote the outbreak of new technologies that are available to the artist, they still use deeying aspect in their recordings. There are three main style of graffit art: the tage, the throw up, and the piece. The tag is a writer's or graffiti's artist signature. The tage that made graffit famous was TAKI 183, which belonged to a seventeen-year-old named Demertuis. He tagged the New York subways. The New York Times published and article on him in 1971, which causes graffiti to explode. The next stage of graffiti is the throw up. The throw up is an evolved tag that has more of an outline, which contains teo or more colors. After the throw up is the final stage of graffiti: the piece. A piece is a full masterpiece of graffiti. A piece must contain at least three colors. Pieces are extremely creative and vibrant are called burners. In New York, the spiritual home of graffiti. A pieces are created on subway cars.
