Malcontent Essay - Not so Furious

The Fast and Furious generation of automobile modifiers has it all wrong. Immediately after the movie came out, the streets had become littered with ridiculous looking Asian imports as well as domestics. Fortunately the European car population was not hit nearly as hard. As a few years have passed since the original Fast and Furious hit the big screen, young car enthusiasts have set a goal to make their cars look similar to Mardi Gras parade floats. With these people modifying their cars the way they do, they create a false sense of high speed security. Most of the modifications that can be purchased at low cost automotive stores will not help your car go faster, handle better, or break quicker. The drivers of these poorly modified cars disagree as it is a common sight to see dangerous, high-speed maneuvers by inexperienced drivers who are trying to simulate what they had seen in the movie.

One trend among young car modifiers is to cover the majority of their cars surface with vinyl stickers. Unfortunately vinyl performance company stickers do not make the car any quicker, just increasingly ridiculous. Too often will I see cars with the wrong rear trunk emblems. The Skyline GTR is a Nissan produced only in Japan and is an incred

Another emerging trend in the quest for speed is attaching a polished Folgers coffee can onto the exhaust. Not only does this four-inch tube look out of place on the rear of a small four cylinder, but it sounds horrendous. The goal is to make your car sound powerful, but lately the exhaust tone sounds like a mixture of a beehive and a lawnmower. Meineke is offering incredible deals on ‘performance’ exhausts, but can you really justify spending $300 on a new muffler which will end up rusting through by the end of the year?

There are an endless amount of modifications that can be done to one automobile. The Fast and Furious approach is obviously the worst way to go. The movie was a catalyst for every young male driver to add a new set of lights, coffee-can exhaust, and large aluminum wing to their car. It’s a waste of time and money to modify a car using generic parts which only give and overall cheap look to the car. Do the research, spend the money, but keep it tasteful.

Down-force is an important factor in high speed motor sport. Without adequate down force, race cars would not be able to take turns as fast or make rapid changes in elevation without slowing. For most import cars, their front wheel drive systems require down force in the front of the car. However, it is a common sight to see large, bleacher-like, aluminum spoilers bolted onto the trunks of cars. At high speeds, this increased down force in the rear of the car can be extremely dangerous and can induce accidents
