The Crucible

Arthur Miller writes this play to warn us of the effects of mass hysteria and the way people conform to the crowd. Throughout this play we are shown that people will do dangerous and unethical things, I am going to write about who I thought was responsible for the prosecution of innocent people.

Through this play we are shown that people do dangerous and unexpected things when they follow a crowd. I have come to reason that the three people most to blame for the witch hysteria and the subsequent death of innocent people are Abagail Williams, Ruth, Thomas Putnam and Reverend Parris. Each of these people in some way caused harm to blameless people, and I will explain what these people knowingly or unknowingly did to contribute to the death of the innocent people hanged as witches in Salem village 1862.

I believe another reason why Abagail accused everyone of communicating with the devil and being a witch it was to get attention off the townspeople. Through acting Abagail has led the people of Salem to believe that the devil is loose in their town. There was 19 people to die in Salem during the witch trials, and they all died for one reason…greed, it was greed on the part of Abagail because she let innocent people die because Abagail wanted to have another relationship with Proctor. Abagail also set the other girls up to be blamed of witchcraft.

There are many reasons why Parris is one of the main people to blame for the trials these are he calls for hate and “cries witchcraft” eventually he has a very bad relationship with proctor which impacts on how he makes decisions. He refuses to let the judges liste
