Fitzgerald’s use of Symbolism and Imagery in the Great GatsbyFitzgerald has used a tremendous amount of symbolism and imagery in The Great Gatsby. Almost every description in the novel has a symbolic meaning. The main way symbolism is portrayed in this novel is by the use of colors. The most important two colors in the novel are green and yellow or gold. Green symbolizes many things in The Great Gatsby. One important thing it symbolizes through out the novel is the symbolic meaning of green which is also “new money” as the new money is dollars which has a green color. From this novel we learn that in the twenties it was better to have “old money” or wealth than to have “New money” so it was better to be yellow than to be green. If we read the novel we notice that a lot of the things Gatsby owns is yellow or gold on the outside, like his car or his golden toilet set etc. but we now that it is all fake because it is only the things he owns that look yellow or gold. And if we look at the little details that Gatsby didn’t think about we notice that Gatsby is only trying to show that he has “old wealth”. If we look at his car for example we see a large
