Curriculum Critiques

The textbook that I chose to evaluate was Scott Foresman Reading New Beginnings1. This textbook is for second grade students, approximately 7-8 years old. The story that I chose to evaluate is Franny and Ginny by Pat Cummins and illustrated be Fred Willingham. This story is about two young girls who are sisters. Fanny is the eldest and Ginny the younger. Ginny copies or does what Franny does all the time. Franny finds a lady big and then Ginny also does. This is the prominent theme through out this story what ever Franny does, Ginny does. Franny is annoyed by this and sends her away. Then Franny feels bad about sending her away, she finds her and apologizes. .
The two characters in this story are Franny and Ginny, these are two African American girls Franny is about seven to ten years old and Ginny is about four to six years old. The facial features are true to their heritage. They are both dresses in average children's clothing, shirt and shorts and overalls and t-shirt. There hair is in many braids; with bobble ties and barrettes like most young African American girls wear their hair. This seems to be a stereotype of how young African American girls all wear their hair. These girls have customary English names without any ethnicity. They are the only culture shown in this story. Which show's that even though this is supposed to show children that people from all cultures live in the country, no just in the city, the have plain English names and no friends with them.
This story takes place in an agrarian society. The girls start their story off in a large field or meadow with a forest in the back round. There are no buildings in any of the pictures. This could mean that they are not accepting in the rural community and have no friends except for each other. The house has no really back round, no furniture, except the chairs that the girls are sitting on. When Ginny goes to here room and lays on the bed it looks like the floor with a pillow.
