Oliver Cromwell

Oliver Cromwell is a very detrimental character in English history. Cromwell wished to bring religious freedom, a strong central military leadership, and a true constitutional government. On the other hand he confused the already uneasy and vague ideals of sovereignty, Cromwell had a handpicked parliament that couldn’t get anything done and he tried to influence public life too much.

England was experiencing a very tumultuous time. Charles I placed levies on people and the parliament were extremely upset over the taxation without consent. One Commons member , by the name of Oliver Cromwell persistently bugged and urged the Parliament to take away the Book of Common Prayer. Cromwell caustically chastised the bishops of the Anglican Church. This resulted in the impeachment of the Archbishop Laud.

Within the following year after Lauds impeachment the House of Commons issued a restatement of the parliaments role and the laws it had placed into effect. This was known as the Grand Remonstrance. King Charles fled and criticized parliament leaders, which commended the English Civil War, which raged four years. Cromwell provided a strong militaristic leader for the rebels. He wasn’t too keen on political thinking but military wise he know how to play his cards. Cromwell developed the new mopel Army as he coined it. His soldiers thrown fluent sermons. The Civil War was victorious for the Anti-Royalists at Naseby and over took the king.

Overall Oliver Cromwell was for the better or England. He took a country in a great upheaval and reissued it to what he believed was for the benefit or the people. He successfully led the country militaristically but politically he ruled weakly. Although Cromwell’s contributions were positive more so than negative he still had his downfalls. He led with high-minded ideals that were a tad bit unrealistic. Cromwell’s leadership was a bit too HARSH at times. Banning social activities it too much. Like most who come to power he wanted to keep it. The best way to do so is to keep the people in check, or at least in Cromwell’s mind. But overall Oliver Cromwell’s proved to be a decent figure in English History although not the best he wasn’t the worst be any means.
