New England vs. Chesapeake Region (DBQ)
America has always been a land of cultural divergence, this fact is even evident in the early settlements of the New World, particularly the regions of the Chesapeake and New England. Although these colonial areas were both settled by people largely of English origin, during the 1700s these two regions had evolved into two distinctly separate entities. The reason for this divergence is an interesting study, as several variables come into effect. The main reason for the two colonies’ distinctions is their different drives for settlement. The first colonist’s of New England traveled to the New World to gain religious freedom and start a new life, while the early settlers of the Chesapeake colonies came to the New World seeking a fortune, so they could return to England glorious . These two distinctive motivations for settlement fueled the growth of the two different regions, but through immensely diverse means. After hundreds of years, each region had gained its own unique identity that was both different from each other and of its sovereign country of England. English interest in the Chesapeake area began in the late sixteenth century. The English had marvelous plans for the Chesap
The Jamestown colony failed for several decades, because of the nature of its inhabitants. The colony was predominantly male, and most of the settlers were only concerned with their own personal gain as opposed to the welfare of the entire colony. These men’s greed and irresponsibility led to an extremely high mortality rate of nearly 50%. Instead of taking the time to build a secure and well engineered city, the colonists threw together an ill planned out settlement that did not shelter them from the harsh winters or the hostile natives. Instead of planting crops, these men explored the land hoping to discover an alleged plethora of gold (Doc F). Soon, settlers starved and profiteers sold food with a markup that sometimes exceeded 15 times what the food was actually worth. Under the strict religious rule in New England, men were encouraged to remember the religious end of their callings, and only make a moderate profit (Doc E). This is in stark distinction to the Chesapeake colonies, where wealthy planters possessed incredible fortunes.
