Reflection Paper #2

Throughout history, there have been many movements for social reform. These movements have included things from civil rights for minority groups and women to environmental conservation. Each of these movements had the big name people who really helped the movement, but oftentimes there were people who played roles in these movements that did not achieve the national recognition of others, but still helped to create change. That was the purpose of this section of the leadership course, to identify the leaders who helped with these movements but on more of a local level.
One of the most important things I learned from this section of the course was the fact that one person can create change. I say this because I researched civil rights activist Daisy Bates. Daisy Bates was one of the key figures in helping to integrate Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Because of her persistence and dedication to equal rights for African-American, the face of education in America has been changed. .
Researching Daisy Bates also made me realize the importance about standing strong in the face of adversity. Mrs. Bates never backed down and stood strong in her beliefs even though threats were made on her life, people criticized her, and she lost her newspaper. She realized the importance of standing up for cause and fighting until the end. Because of this, I am inspired to stay committed to the things that I firmly believed need to be changed.
One thing that I have always wondered about is the different support groups for people in prison. From the presentation on Debbie Kilroy, I found out that there are groups out there that offer support to people in prisons. Ms. Kilroy specifically targets women in Australian prisons. She offers the m support and guidance through a group called Sisters Inside. Because of her involvement with the organization, the recidivism rate in Australian prisons has lowered.
