Waco Tragedy
The Waco tragedy is a story that might be well known to some but unknown to others, the truth about the situation is –it resulted in a catastrophe which will be known for all time. The Branch Davidian Waco crisis in 1993 was a disaster due to the intention of Koresh and its followers and the resolution of the situation by the FBI.David Koresh was born “Vernon Wayne Howell” (Thibodeau 38). His mother, Bonnie was only fourteen or fifteen when he was born in 1959” (Thibodeau 38). He never knew his father, “ Bobby split when he was a baby” (Thibodeau 38). Koresh described his childhood as lonely. David was “slightly dyslexic couldn’t keep up in school, and the other kids with typical cruelty, dubbed him “Mr. Retardo”’ (Thibodeau 38). Vernon had dropped out of high school “unable to bear the constant humiliation” (Thibodeau 39). However, he had a musical ability and a strong interest in the bible. When he was “20, Koresh turned to the Seventh-day Adventists, his mothers church (Cole 15). When David first came to “Mount Carmel in 1981, he was a confused twenty-two-year old beset by visions” (Thibodeau 45). Two years earlier he’d been baptized in his mothers church, but was exp
David Koresh and compound members “had been under investigation for 10 months because of evidence he was building a huge stockpile of illegal weapons” (Popkin, Rainie 2). The ATF, “the bureau [which] is responsible of reducing both the criminal use of firearms and trafficking on illegal firearms and explosives” (Nayhan 11) tried to arrest David Koresh. The first day of the siege was a disaster when spotting “Koresh walking out of the compound bearing an infant in one arm and an AK-47 automatic n the other” (Popkin, Rainie 2). When federal and state law-enforcement officials “concluded that cult members were stockpiling guns and preparing to make legal semiautomatics into illegal automatic weapons” (Bonfant, Lacayo 3). ATF agents then acquired to the compound “search warrant in hand, more than 100 agents charged the buildings early Sunday morning, only to be met by an explosion of gunfire" (Bonfante, Lacayo 3). The compound Davidians were not afraid of what might happen they were ready to serve their Lord and prepare for End Time. Six people were shot to death when ATF agents stormed [their] property without warning on February 28. The siege led on, “on April 19, 1993, the FBI, citing concerns for the safety of the children inside the compound, ended the fifty-one days of negotiations and mounted a second raid” (Thibodeau 72).
