The issue of global warming is Bill Mckibben’s “The Environmental Issue from Hell.” He wants to know what it is, and how it is influencing our earth. To understand the issue and bring attention to the facts of the issue one must think the problem as a moral question. In “Global Warming-Are We Doing the Right Thing”, Bjorn Lomborg writes about how human ingenuity and social responsibility can solve the global environmental problems facing us with global warming. He argues that global warming is important to environment, politics, and economics interests. The total cost of societal damage from global warming comes to an estimated $5 trillion. Hit hardest from global warming will be the developing countries that will not have the resources to adapt as fast to the change as 1st world countries. Bjorn’s next point is that solutions to the problem must be weighed for their possible negative consequences. From a 2001 UN Climate Panel (IPCC) report, Bjorn tells that essentially the report recommends less consumption and a change in lifestyles as a solution. The problem the IPCC finds is that society is slow to change because of the media’s absence in promoting less consumption.

Nering’s article was my favorite. The articles’ plainness and its irony to current energy issues, gives it a refreshing clarity. I found his mathematics helpful in making his point. His ideas had the greatest impact on me because the basis of his argument is on clear facts and his solution while broad, is substantial and straightforward. The cohesive points of his article towards the previous editorials concerns how our future is dependent on the present. The clearest correlation I came upon was relating to Durning’s article about free parking by. Both articles support change in our consumption, one generally, the other just concerns automobile use. Another unifying point is that increasing consumption will lead to a quick drain of the supply of resources and contribute to global warming. While Nering never mentions global warming, consumption goes hand in hand with it. As we increase consumption, more and more pollution and waste will be created, which will further develop global warming. A challenge is formed here between Nering’s and Bjorn’s articles. Bjorn’s ideas advocate rapid global economic develop and this development would have to mean more consumption to sustain its growth. Growth will help those people it affects, however, it will also deplete our resources and possibly lead to an uncertain future.
