Extended Metaphor Essay on a Nature Setting

As I was resting in my small nook behind a ‘spring bouquet’ (Viburum Tinus), I recognized a quaint blanket of spider web, tightly woven between several small twigs. From a distance the web, littered with tiny loose impediments, looked like an ultra thin piece of fabric suspended in the air. There was no room to pass through, as if it had taken hours to create. I noticed another web to my left; this web was larger, and far more ornate, clearly fabricated by a larger species of spider. Although the inhabitant of the smaller web was not present, it was evident that it was a rather small spider. The web was so tight, as if to catch the smallest insects, even ones invisible to the eye. However, this web had taken victim to the changing of the seasons, and several fallen leaves lie in its mesh,

The larger web stands vertical, in an octagonal shape, as if to catch insect flying in a horizontal motion. This web seems to have been contemplated in


On the other hand the smaller web captures insects and other small airborne creatures, along with leaves and sticks. The items stuck in the woven cover between the small branches of bush are like information processed in the human mind. The tightly woven web captures everything, just as a person would compile great amounts of information and ideas. Leaves and sticks litter the web’s surface area, and are merely superfluous to the spider’s well being. What are important to the spider are bugs, bugs that supply food and nutrition to the spider. The other web is open, and lets smaller unimportant items fall through, yet keeps what is necessary to the spider’s survival. The gratuity of human ideas can be detrimental to one’s state of being as it is necessary to take what is necessary for one’s survival to eliminate the excess ideas.

The web seems new, crisp and fresh, built strong for the spider yet indispensable against a bird. To many,
