Normal

In the film "Normal" Roy's transition from male to female was very hard on not only him, but also on his whole family. We see each family member struggle with this transition for their own reasons and in their own ways. Irma, who is the first to find out about it, begins blaming herself. She believes she must have done something wrong as his wife to make him act this way. She believes that a man should be strong, but doesn't see how strong her husband really is being until further in the movie. Several times throughout the movie, she describes how she loves how strong and rough a man's hand is, and how Roy's no longer feels this way. She is a housemother and does all the work around the house. She does all the cooking, cleaning and childcare, even though both of her children are pretty well grown up. She feels like girls (particularly her daughter) should be concerned with how they dress and look. Many times we hear her telling her daughter to put something more feminine on. I do not think that Roy's transition really changed this view she has of gender. She grew to accept him, however, she still wanted to do all the feminine work around the house. She still did all the cleaning and cooking, and even picked out Roy's

In my opinion, the most dramatic portrayal of gender stereotypes came from Roy's father. Throughout Roy's life we are told that his father is very disappointed in him because he isn’t masculine enough and didn't want to take over the farm when his dad died. His father always wanted to have a boy to hand the farm over to, and Roy just wasn't that boy. He refused to hand it over to one of his daughters even though one of them wanted nothing more. He just thought that a woman could never do a man's job on the farm. He thought of Roy as a failure for not being strong enough to manage the farm, yet not weak enough to give into his father's demands. The pressure from him is the reason that Roy almost commits suicide. Roy's mother decides it would be a good idea to hide from him the truth about Roy's transition since he is dying. Roy agrees to do so, yet comes to the house dressed as a woman, but his father mistakes him as one of his sisters. Roy's mom seems to be quite unaffected by Roy's decision to have the surgery and become a woman, and the movie does not give us much information about her thoughts on gender. It does however show her cooking and doing the feminine roles around her house, but with a husband like hers that is only to be expected.

Her brother, Wayne, however does not take the transition so easily. Wayne and his father never really had a good relationship, and Wayne viewed this transition like he was loosing his father for good. He felt like it would take away any chance of his father and him ever having a relationship. He was angry that Roy was doing this to the family and to his mother. We first see Wayne interact with Roy during the holiday when he came home. Roy at this point was pretty far into the transition, yet was still trying to act somewhat masculine, as Irma said to impress Wayne. He did things like bossing Irma around, watching football, trying to open stuck jars, and fixing the cork when it bro
