Causes of the Revolutionary War

In 1754, a British were at war with the French, Spanish, and Austrians. This war was called the French and Indian War or the Seven Years War. In the same year a twenty-one-year-old George Washington was sent to the Ohio country with 150 Virginia men. Washington ran into a group of French troop just outside of Fort Duquesne. There the first bullet of the war was shot and Washington came out victorious over the French troops. Although, Washington had won the battle, the French quickly retaliated and forced Washington to surrender Fort Necessity. In 1758, William Pitt was sent to try and do something in the war against the French. By the end of 1758, Pitt had dramatically turned the tables of the war. In September 1759, British and American forces attacked Quebec and fought for five days. The British took over control of Canada and in 1763 the Treaty of Paris was signed. They came to the conclusion that they would not import any British goods until the Stamp Act was repealed. The Sons of Liberty was created in protest against the Stamp Act. This secret organization consisted of colonists that would talk about how to get rid of the Stamp Act. They were known for forcing stamp agents to resign their posts. In the summer of 1766, King George III of England replaced Prime Minister Rockingham with William Pitt. Pitt was interested in the colonists and believed that all colonists should have the same rights as English men. William Pitt suddenly came sick and Charles Townshend took over the government. He was not interested in what was good for the colonists, but what would give more power to the royal officials. He convinced the Parliament to pass a series of laws imposing new taxes on the colonists. These laws included special taxes on lead, paint, paper, glass and tea imported by colonists.
