what its meaning was. Take for instance his sofa, which to most people would just be an

object to sit on. De Maistre would see it as more than wood and fabric, as a part of his

life. The sofa was memorabilia that he could take with him through life. Every time he

looked at that sofa he could appreciate it not for its purpose, rather for the value of time
