The Question of the Canon
ITALO CALVINO, WHY READ THE CLASSICS? Italo Calvino starts his work “Why Read the Classics?” by putting a definition; “the classics are those books about which you usually hear people saying: `I´m rereading ...´ never `I´m reading ...´” (Calvino 1999:3). Then little by little, adding information, Italo Calvino writes more definitions. This is a good way to explain readers why it is important to read the classics. Some reasons that are explained are the next: - That we should reread classics when we are adults, to see the work from another perspective. - That we discover things we had already known. - That we should read the classics for love. In the middle of Italo Calvino´s work, we find the next definition; “Classics are books which, the more we think we know them through hearsay, the more original, unexpected, and innovative we find them.” I absolutely agree Calvino with this definition, because we hear and read many things about the classics, but there is nothing better that reading them, to know exactly how they are. Italo Calvino proposes the problem of “how to relate the reading of classics to the reading of all the other texts which are not classics?” An
One of the problems of the formation of the canon is the development of society. If we hardly find some women in the canon is because society did not allow women to write until the eighteenth century. School plays an important role in the formation of the canon, because literature is defined as knowledge. But this final knowledge has to be achieved bu the knowledge of how to read and write. So we can say that the canonn belongs to the history of the school.
