Marriage Supper of the Lamb

“Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.” (Revelation 19:9)

Everyone loves a love story, and what better love story than that of the Marriage of the Lamb? This is a marriage such as could never be imagined on this earth, for it is the wedding of the Son of God to the One whom the Father has chosen to be His Bride. If you can imagine the affections and expectations of a wedding in our human terms, how much more does all heaven anticipate the day when the Father will present the Bride to His Son, the bridegroom?

This story of the marriage of the Lamb cannot be viewed only under the microscope of today’s society, but needs to be compared to the time in which the story was written and the customs of that day. There are three major parts to this form of wedding; the betrothal, the presentation, and the marriage or the marriage supper.

Marriage was not a young man and a young woman deciding to further their relationship, it was a contract that two young people had no choice or say in. This contract was usually signed up between the father of the boy and the father of the girl, when they were very small children. A bill of divorcement could only break

The next step of the wedding was the presentation. When both the young man and the young woman were old enough to become married, the son would tell his father that he was ready to fulfill the contract of betrothal that they had. The father would then send his servants, also called “friends of the bridegroom” to the house of the bride. The servants would then require the father of the bride to sign the contract to fulfill the covenant that was already made. After the contract was signed, there would be a procession from the bride’s house to the bridegroom’s house. The ceremony that would come after this procession is what is referred to as the “presentation.” The father of the bride would take his daughter’s hand and place it in the hand of the bridegroom’s father to signify the carrying out of the agreement. The father of the bridegroom would then place the bride’s hand in the hand of the bridegroom’s to signify his fulfilling of the contract. “In Scripture, the betrothal is sometimes referred to as the marriage. This second step, the presentation, is also referred to as the marriage. Scripture does not distinguish between the betrothal and the presentation; it simply speaks of both of them as the marriage. You have to read the context to see which step in view.” We also can apply this to our marriage to the Lord Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 5:25 we find, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.” This second step of the marriage will take place when Christ returns and takes his bride away. If we based our marriage to Christ on our works only, no one would be acceptable to marry Christ. But the work that Christ did on the cross will have perfected us, that Christ will be perfectly satisfied with us, the church. “So perfect and complete is His work that there will be no
