Knowing that there is a chance that she could have done wrong and realizing the amount of guilt that is already on her shoulders, the young lady proceeds to confront her past. In doing so, she opens herself to pain, and the feeling of guilty, which the story somewhat shows us she is already feeling. When the witch first starts showing her what she has done, the young lady begins to fear what will happen to her, and does not want to find out what else she had done. “ ‘Let me flee – let me flee and hide myself, that they may not look upon me!’ she cried. But, with returning recollection, she hushed herself, and was still as death.” (328) This shows the woman fearing finding out what she had done, but also shows that she wishes to find out what she has done. It seems like she has become embarrassed and almost fearful to what might come next. For this reason, guilt has taken control of her because she realizes the harm she has done, and is unsure of how to react to it.

“Guilt” takes a turn for the worse in this short story. By the young lady embarking on a search to find peace with herself, she realizes information she might not have wanted to. Guilt is a heavy burden one carries and if they do not accept and repent for what they have done, the sin itself will take them to their grave.
