Guilt
“Guilt”, as defined in Oxford’s English Dictionary, is a feeling of having committed wrong or failed in an obligation. In “The Hollow of the Three Hills”, a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a troubled and curious young lady realizes that her life was now miserable because of what she possible had done to her loved ones leaving her full of guilt. Guilt ties into its title by showing that once one admits to being guilty then they fall in between hills and are in the hollow of it. She embarks in a search to find out what she has done and in doing so feels guilty for her loved one’s pain and suffering. The woman wants to see how her loved ones were living now causing her to have guilt. She soon realizes how awful she had been and almost makes one think that she died from a guilty heart. Guilt plays a very important role in the fact that in her trying to find peace in her life, the young lady ends up going down this “guilty trip” road that causes her much pain. It seems like she has become embarrassed and almost fearful to what might come next. For this reason, guilt has taken control of her because she realizes the harm she has done, and is unsure of how to react to it. “Guilt” takes a turn for the worse in this short story. By the young lady embarking on a search to find peace with herself, she realizes information she might not have wanted to. Guilt is a heavy burden one carries and if they do not accept and repent for what they have done, the sin itself will take them to their grave. The young lady is unaware of the possible pain should might have caused her loved ones to have and definitely doesn’t know how the feeling of guilt will come with it. She then trie
