The Comparison of Characters in "Young Goodman Brown" and The Scarlet Letter

The characters in Nathaniel Hawthorn's The Scarlet Letter and "Young Goodman Brown" are very similar in how the characters are presented, interact with each other, and looked upon. But with those similarities, there are also major differences. These similarities and differences all reflect upon Hawthorn's style, giving you variety with the sense of conformity. However, the agreements in both works show that the influence upon characters by other characters is very much a quality that is important to people.

Goodman Brown and Arthur Dimmesdale found the influence of others tiring and degrading to their conscious at times. Goodman Brown was put before Satan worshipers in the forest, and as it says, the devil himself at one point in his story made him wake up to the evil omen that had found him in the forest, whether or not it be a real event or a dream. The characters Nathaniel Hawthorn's works have a lot of the same purposes, surroundings and views by the other characters in the story. This shows that Hawthorn values the views of the influence of other people on one person, which is presented as a main theme in many more of his stories.

Hester can be compared to Faith by the influence of others in the story, as they stay alongside their lovers through prosecution by the people they are around every day. Hester wears an A embroidered on a black cloth draped on her chest. The A resembles and stands for adultery, which she committed. Faith has nothing but ribbons in her hair that symbolizes the contrast of being a little girl held in her man's arms to later in the wood when found by Brown in the tree and standing next to him in the prosecution of being evil. Faith never had a child in the duration of the story where as Hester did, and had many times played an important role in defining what Hester was to do.
