Consumer Culture

In every school across the country a trend is developing. Not a new trend with clothes, or hair, or cars. This trend is much worse. This trend affects every kid in every school. It is the junk food trend. You can not walk into any learning institution right now and not see an advertisement for chips, or pop, or even fast food burgers. The junk food world is taking over the schools and it is taking over fast.
When companies get involved in the school it can be a very intimidating thing. Not just for a kid to walk down a hall and see four different advertisements for items like coke, McDonalds, and Nike. It is also intimidating for the teachers. They have to worry about advertising just as much, because every teacher wants that new computer lab, or new text book, since the old ones are barely staying together. There was even an incident where a student was suspended because he wore a Pepsi shirt on Coke day. Evidently Coke was looking for a school that had the most creative way to promote Coke, so in a picture of a group of students wearing Coke shirts the student decided to wear a Pepsi shirt. That student probably would not have been suspended if Coke was giving 500 dollars to the school who won. Teachers are also pressured in other ways. "McDonalds has a program where teachers can work in there restaraunt and McDonalds will give them 25 percent of what that restaraunt makes while the teacher is working there. (Smith)".
"In the United States alone, kids influence around 500 billion dollars a year in purchases. (Cambell)" So no wonder big businesses look at schools as a good means of advertising. They will put anything that has there name anywhere they can, from book covers, to school buses. "Like when Susan Crockett walked her daughter to the school bus stop four years ago she was shocked to see that the bus was covered with advertisements for burger king, Wendy's and other name brand products.
