There Eyes Were Watching God

In the selected passages of Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston shares, through the stylistic language of Janie and other characters, much spiritual and esoteric wisdom and belief. The “life lessons” that Janie undergo come as a result of such occurrences in her life as repression, love, and religious faith. Thematically these passages suggest the idea that one’s spirit can never die, only sometimes become submersed in the oppressions of another entity. Also, the idea that God is a prevalent force among man is portrayed in the novel. Janie’s experiences intertwined with the knowledge of Hurston create a style of writing that is sometimes uplifting, sometimes somber, and always real

Janie experiences the death of Joe, her oppressive husband, “The Little Emperor of the cross roads,” in a way in which she finds herself bereft of any negative emotion. Her half sarcastic, half truthful description of Joe as a Napoleonic figure sets a tone of alleviation that he is gone. Most importantly, she experiences a manifestation of death in herself. As far as Joe is concerned, “all things concerning death and burial were said and done,” but through the death of her lifestyle under the domineering pres

Throughout the passages in which Janie and Teacake are about to weather the storm, Janie’s strong conviction in God is shown. Janie expresses her belief that “People don’t die till dey time come” and shows although her words are spoken in an uneducated manner, her wisdom and belief are shared by many well-educated people around the world. Janie’s belief that the “Ole Massa is doin’ His work” and when she tells Joe that

“If you kin see de light at daybreak, you don’t keer if you die at dusk” she shows the reason why she is content with her life after Teacake dies. Teacake, while death is afoot, asks Janie, “But ‘sposing you wuz tuh die, now. You wouldn’t git mad at me for draggin’ yuh heah?” not realizing that Janie has already weathered her own storm during all of the tribulations of her life. At the point of the novel, during the storm, Janie has everything she always dreamed of and nothing could ever take away the love that she has in her life. Janie believes that through God and “His work” everything happens as a result of a larger plan. This strong assurance that Janie has of God enlightens her to the way things are in her life.
