We all search for the meaning of life. Why are we here? What do we do with our lives? What’s the purpose of our existence? Does any of this matter? But the truth is there is no truth. Many think they might have the answers to these age-old questions, but in reality they only have guesses. Chris didn’t pretend to know the answers, but he did follow what he believed, which is more than I can say

Chris McCandless was a good kid, unknowingly touching the lives of everyone he met. Yet, civilization just was not for him and his state of mind, or so he felt. Chris was very unconventional in the fact that he would hang out with homeless people on Saturday nights giving them food while all of his friends were at parties getting drunk. Chris grew up very well off, never having to worry about money, yet always worrying about those who didn’t have any. He never understood how some people had so much money while others had nothing and no one to even care. With no plan yet in mind, upon graduating high school, he went on to college only to appease his parents. While attending Emory University, Chris took classes concerning politics and the food crisis in third world countries, fueling his anger and opening his mind even more to the treacherous, careless society we live in. Holding a college degree and plenty of money, he was far from satisfied and wanted nothing to do with these “material things”. In fact, as his father Walt put it, “Chris was very much of the school that you should own nothing except what you can carry on your back at a dead run”(Krakauer 32). Upon giving 25,000 dollars, which was the last of his college fund, to charity and abandoning his beloved car, his family, his friends, and most of his possessions, Chris decided he needed to invent a new life for himself, and so he did. Losing touch with his loved ones and reality, Chris basically ran away to live life off nature and find himself through this epic journey. A few years later in the Alaska taiga, a moose hunter came across his decomposing body inside an old, run-down bus.
