Elton Mayo and Likert
The Joe’s Pharmacy is an individually owned business located in the heart of historic downtown Joe’s. The business has been in the area for about 20 years. Stated in the company logo is, “Joe’s Pharmacy-A Neighbor You Can Trust,” with the motto “Helping you lead a healthier life.” It is constantly being enforced that it is a customer based business. The store has a gift section, a gourmet section, and a pharmacy. It is not the typical pharmacy scene. The gift section contains cards, expensive collectible dolls, Joe’s memorabilia, and candles. In the gourmet section, you will find gourmet chocolate, homemade sauces, and candies. Then there is the pharmacy area, where the disaster begins behind the pharmacy counter; including the normal pharmacy store aisles, special care items for the elderly, and a whole section of vitamins. When applying for the job at the pharmacy, the atmosphere was inviting, and all the employees were incredibly friendly. After working there for about six months and getting the behind the scenes look at the business, I came to discover the business was one big mess. The full time workers consist of the management, and the employees who worked 9am-5pm during the week. The part time w
According to Mayo, the feelings and attitudes of workers cannot be ignored in order to achieve a successful organization. Within the pharmacy all feelings and attitudes of workers are put aside. People are not computers, they have emotions, and need emotional recognition. It is proven that employees work better under encouraging emotional settings. It makes an employee want to try harder when they feel like they are a part of the business, not just a machine that rings people up at the cash register. Often times when we would get rewarded for something, it was so encouraging that we would work harder. We would strive after one compliment for another, but start slacking because recognition for your work is not consistent. Employees are treated like robots at the pharmacy, and are discouraged to work hard because of it. What isn’t realized is we make the company. Without employees, there is no company. By ignoring our feelings about the job, they are not giving us a chance to voice effective ideas, concepts and strategies for a better work place and business. They keep running the workers into a big contradictory circle. Mayo’s points are needed within the Joe’s Pharmacy. orkers are all students. The pharmacy presents themselves as a business that is organized and successful with a team of employees that work together to do it all for the customers. The customers benefit greatly from this, but on the other end the management does not know how to effectively benefit their employees. They are so wrapped up in pleasing the customers, that being fair to the employees is not even something that crosses their mind. The part time workers are treated unfairly and not taken seriously. The system of communication used by the management is ineffective. They don’t try to understand employees, or let them know what is going on within the organization. Likert’s Benevolent/Authoritative management system describes the management at the pharmacy. If and when an employee is given some kind of recognition, their work immediately advances. Elton Mayo’s human relations concepts describe what is wrong with the communication within the pharmacy. There are many problems that are evident and waiting to be solved. As stated by Mayo, the organization providing economic, psychological, and social rewards for the employees overcame more weaknesses. The Joe’s Pharmacy has an economical reward for part-time workers. For every “frequent shopper” card you signed customers up for, you will receive twenty five cents. For the most part, customers are not interested in the “frequent shopper” card. On average an employee will make an extra quarter a month from it, the most I ever made off of them was seventy five cents in one month. I would say it is not the
