Affirmative action is a controversial subject because many people from the majority feel they are being put at a disadvantage just because they are white. I believe the concept of affirmative action and giving preference to people based on their race or gender should be done away with. I want people to be judged by their qualifications not by something they have no control over like their race. Another reason affirmative action should be done away with is because it is giving less qualified people positions that they do not deserve. When a school like the University of Michigan gives minority students extra points for being minorities they are cheating white students. By giving the minority students extra points, a less qualified student can take the spot of a more qualified white student who did better in high school and on their SAT’s. The University of Michigan uses a point system where “being a minority earns you 20 points and writing an outstanding essay earns you only 1 point (Negative about…),” so in essence, they are saying that being a minority is 20 times as important as being able to write well. Another case is where Alan Bakke was not admitted to the University of California at Davis because of a quota system the school used. He claimed his scores were higher than some of the minorities admitted scores were and he was correct. The Supreme Court found that the quota system being used by UCD was not constitutional and ordered UCD to admit Bakke. This case shows that even the Supreme Court thinks that affirmative action is unconstitutional in some ways.

Affirmative action is supposed to end discrimination at the work place and in education. It does end discrimination to minorities but, it then discriminates the majority instead. By giving minorities positions they are not qualified for, they are taking away from people who are qualified. Jobs and spots in colleges should be given to people who deserve them based on their merits, not their skin color.
