Odyssey
Odysseus is the protagonist of the story “The Odyssey.” Throughout the story,Odysseus shows many different Homeric qualities, which help him to survive his dangerous and amazing adventures and return home to his family in Ithaca. The very first and most important quality shown in Odysseus is his intellect. He uses this in the beginning of the story when his men and himself are fighting to defeat Troy. Instead of being slaughtered, Odysseus thought up an idea to build a massive Trojan horse and have one of his men offer it to the soldiers of Troy as a gift. The soldiers of Troy would have no idea that Odysseus would be waiting inside the horse with his men until the soldiers of Troy were asleep. Then they made their move. Troy was defeated and the men were free to return home to Ithaca. “Now, how on earth could I forget Odysseus? Great Odysseus who excels all men in wisdom, excels in offerings too he gives the immortal gods who rule the vaulting skies?” The down side to this was that Odysseus did not feel the need to thank Poseidon the God of the seas for helping in the offering of the horse so Poseidon cursed Odysseus to sail the waters for many years to come. Throughout his many adventures along his way home, Odysse
A last, but not final quality the mighty Odysseus portrayed was the confidence in his authority. Everyone who knew of Odysseus respected him and was more than willing to abide by his demands. An example of this was when Odysseus and his men sailed to the kingdom of the dead. Here Odysseus’ shipmates had to wait for him on the ship as Odysseus entered the realm of the dead. Odysseus was told by Circe’s to find the ghost of Tiresias in the kingdom of the dead. Through the underworld Odysseus encounters many fallen friends and heroes like the spirit of Hercules and the spirit of Achilles. He also encountered the grieving spirit of his own mother who had taken her life in heartbreak of her lost son. She tells him of his wife back at Ithaca, “She’s still waiting there in your halls, poor woman, suffering so, her life an endless hardship like your own…” After speaking to her and Tiresias, Odysseus returns to his ship. His shipmates could have easily left him stranded in the kingdom of the dead, but they waited for his return. “I rushed back to my ship, commanded all hands to take to the decks and cast off cables quickly. They swung aboard at once, they sat to the oars in ranks and a strong tide of the Ocean River swept her on downstream
