College Essay

I still get a little tense when I think of my first day in high school. There I was surrounded by hundreds of unfamiliar faces and feeling lost and confused. This might not seem like it would be such a daunting situation but my prior school experience was very different. You see my first nine years of schooling were spent at a small private Catholic school with 15 students per grade. We wore uniforms and had to follow an extensive rulebook that I"m sure would never survive a public school.
Not that it was all that easy in the halls of Catholic School. While I did not have to navigate waves of backpacks I did have to dodge the lazer line scrutiny and vertal arrows of Sister Mary Christopher about the color of my socks or my posture.
I can remember the way in which butterflies surged about my stomach as I walked around school trying to find my classes that first day at Delaware Academy. I did know a handful of girls as a result of soccer pre-season, but there were still so many new faces everywhere I looked. Everyone in my grade had basically been together since kindergarten, so I felt as though I had "new girl" permanantly stamped on my forehead. At that point in time I had to choose whether I wanted isolate myself throughout my high school years or make some great, lifelong friends. Don't worry I chose to make friends, something I will never regret. For I still maintain and continue to add onto the friendships I made in that first month of school and thereafter. .
When my varsity soccer season came to an end that first year of school I found myself still wanting to hold onto that comradery that teammates often share. Though I had never played organized basketball before I went out for the junior varsity team, and thoroughly enjoyed that season and all the following. I bonded with so many girls, one who remains my best friend to this day. This move to try something new, and get more involved at school really set a precedent for the rest of high school career.
