The book begins its discussion of Tudor women by focusing on Margaret Beaufort. The book talks about Margaret’s plan to get her son into the royal seat. The book also affirms Margaret was a very devoted to her children and grandchildren. She was involved in a list of charitable works; which included the re-founding of Christ’s College. Margaret was highly intelligent and sought to bring knowledge to others. She spent many hours into planning how she could insure there was adequate training for clergy. She sought to train clergymen, because she was a highly religious person. Next, the book highlighted Catherine of Argon. The book explained her tragic child-rearing saga. Over the course of six years (1510-1516) Catherine experienced one two still born babies, one miscarriage, and one baby who died after seven

Tudor Women is easy read. Plodwen uses practical words in her description of events. The reader does not have a dictionary present to get through the book. The author’s writing is objective. Plowden’s writing has some subjective statements; however, relies on well-known facts to make her case. Plowden also supplied her reader with background knowledge about each of Henry’s wives. If the author would have directly went into explaining each lady’s relationship with Henry, the reader not have gained a true respect for each lady was. Knowledge of Anne Boleyn’s father and upbringing helps the reader to get an idea of who Anne really was. Knowledge of Katherine Howard’s promiscuous past helps the reader to see Katherine illicit behavior was not a novelty. I would recommend this book as a prerequisite to studying Tudor England. The book gives the reader an in-depth history of Henry’s wives. I wish I had read this book before coming into this class. Without prior knowledge, the issue of Henry’s wives is a bit much to grasp. Which wife was be-headed? Which marriage lasted the longest? Which wife bore the king a son? This book answers all of these questions in an easy to read format.
