American Forgien Policy

This article is about the influence of the “west” on the rest of the world, the question that is pertinent in many non-western countries and developing nations. The main concerns of the article addresses many issues that civilizations when they encounter the West have to choose; do they value tradition over technology and economics?

Throughout the article, the author uses an antagonist to his point of view Samuel P. Huntington. In Huntington essay “The Clash of Civilizations”, the civilizations are “whole and intact, watertight and under an eternal sky”. (The Summoning) So in effect the cold war didn’t have any lasting effects on the society’s religions, like Islam, Slavic Orthodox, Western Christianity, Confucianism and Hinduism. The author Fouard Ajami says history and cultural development were messy creatures. Huntington’s view develops a straight line where one civilization ends and the wilderness of another begins.

The author disputes Huntington’s conclusion that the next world war “ will be a between civilizations. The argument forgets that state interests despite being the most dominant actors in the world are written off in favor of cultural interests.
