Wrestling
If you’ve never seen it, and someone mentioned it, wrestling would probably make someone think about two people fighting each other. Maybe it would make you think about the kind of wrestling you see on television, the fake, obnoxious, seemingly impossible “play”. Wrestling is very much the opposite. Wrestling is composed of strength, speed, strategy, and technique. Wrestling is, two people trying to dominate each other, both trying to ultimately reach the same goal. In wrestling there are three types: freestyle, Greco-roman, and collegiate. In my essay I’m going to explain the history and the different types. I will explain the differences in rules and my own personal experience with the different styles. Wrestling has been around for millennia. Wrestling can be traced as far back as 15,000 years through cave drawings in France. Wrestling was even popular during the Middle Ages in Europe. Greco-roman wrestling, which I’m sure you
ve heard of, originated in Greece and was adopted by the Romans, and incorporated into the ancient Olympic games. The Romans made the sport a little less brutal. (Wrestling," Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2003). In Collegiate you aren’t permitted to do a continuous move, so it is harder to “rack-up” points. In my experience of six years, I have attempted both Freestyle and Collegiate style wrestling. I have grown to have the opinion that Collegiate is a harder and seemingly for aggressive style of wrestling. You are able to use many more technical moves as well as your opponent. In Freestyle you are given more time to rest in between periods. In Collegiate you aren’t given any time to rest. I believe Collegiate is harder because you must be more precise in your movement, otherwise you will get penalized.
