Racism In Schools
Many people believe that these days racism is not a very big issue, especially in schools. This is a fact proven to be wrong, several times. Racism is an issue that should never be avoided, especially when it deals with children. When a family immigrates to the U.S they hope to fit in with the rest of the Americans. Immigrant children go to school thinking that the biggest problems they will have to face is getting to know the other children or finding all of their classes etc. What they don’t know is that they will have to face a lot of bullying, rejection, feelings of mistreat and many other hurtful feelings. It is a fact that the most bullied kids in the school are immigrant kids. Kids sometimes send threat notes, take physical action and gang up on their immigrant classmates. There are many reasons why immigrant kids are targeted on in school. The Aboriginal Youth Network has learned that teachers make hurtful remarks concerning Aboriginal kids. Colored kids often graduate less often then the non-Aboriginal students. Students see their teachers acting against immigrant kids and think that it must be the right thing to do. Also another reason why immigrant kids are targeted on is because, many parents are racists. The
Heritage Middle School is not the only school that has a problem with racism. Some places such as the Seattle School District also has had many shootings concerning violence with racist kids. But these aren’t the only places that have a problem with racism. Kids all around the U.S are being targeted at. Every little bit helps kids, so why don’t we do something about it. As I have said before, racism is a situation that should not be taken lightly, especially when it deals with children. Although this is a very hard problem to solve, it is not impossible. I have some solutions to these problems and they may actually work. You can only get through to a kid if you know where they stand in a situation. Our guidance counselors should talk to kids and ask them how they feel about racism. The school newspaper should pass out a survey in all the classes and ask how they think racism can be solved. The school should also have parents come in on a specific day so that you can discuss this problem with them. After all, they play the most important part in their child’s life. They would know how to deal with a situation like this. I think if we take action immediately we may end up helping a lot of students. When other schools see what we are doing the
