In both The Doctor Stories and The Call of Stories, the reader learns about a highly acclaimed Dr. William Carlos Williams. Through his own compositions, his practice as a doctor, and in Cole’s writings, we better understand how fervent, intolerant and benign this Dr. Williams has shown himself to be. The first impressions of Williams as described in Cole’s book make Williams seem like a willing, animated talker who impresses greatly the importance of helping others. In their private meeting, Williams addressed to Coles that “an important part of your life will be spent listening to people tell you their stories and in return want to hear your story about what their story means… everyone thinks that doctors are so great because we help people, but the patients stories help us, if we let them.” This assists the reader in discovering Dr. Williams as a very relaxed man who has much passion for what he does. His use of colloquial speech such as “fancy schools” or “big shots” makes him appear to be very comfortable speaking with Cole’s group, as if the meeting with them was not supposed to be impressive.
