Kick Starting My Motorcycle
Kick starting, it sets an attitude and gives the motorcycle a unique mystique. Some call it old school I call it: attitude starts with a kick. Kick starting can cause some embarrassing moments. Here we are at the Toy Run in the Target parking lot preparing to start the run. All other motorcycles are started and ready to go, but no one is leaving. Why, because my motorcycle is not started. Now everyone is staring at me laughing and waiting. Some of the riders are saying just fix your electric starter. My reply is, as always, “If I would have to explain you wouldn’t understand.” The pressure is on. I throw my leg on the kickstart and jump down: nothing happens. Not thinking, I jump three more times, still nothing happens. Calmly I look around my bike. Dang, I forgot to turn off the kill switch. I turn on the kill switch hoping no one noticed, but the pack is there laughing. I throw my leg on the kickstart, jump down and my bike starts. We begin the run. To keep situations like these from happening; I have made a mental checklist to prepare the motorcycle before I kick-start the bike. I begin with preparing the motorcycle. This mental checklist should help me kick start my bike properly. Kick starting is part of the personality of my bike. It is something I enjoy doing, but I find my self making the same mistakes every now and then and will continue to do so. The next step I need to do is position the bike on level ground. I tried to kick-start my bike on a hill. I jumped on the kickstart and promptly fell over with the bike on its side. Another thing to do is make sure the kickstand is fully in the down position. There have been a couple of instances when I attempted to start the bike and there I was looking down at the old girl on her side. All I have to do to remedy that from happening is to rock the bike to ensure the stand is locked. The last thing to prepare my bike for kick starting is to make sure the transmission is in neutral. e, and inexpensive. All I need to do is keep the spark plugs and points clean. Cleaning them is a simple process of using emery cloth to wipe off the contacts. The next step is making sure the gap is correct. That done, I make sure the gas in the in the tank is quality fuel. Having bad gas will make kick starting very difficult. To remedy this, I carry a fuel additive in my saddlebags to clean the fuel. Ok, my bike is prepared, the switches are on, and the kickstart is in the proper position. I go for the start; I kick and my bike starts on the first try. Now, I am swelling with pride. There are not many around that can still successfully complete what I have done. I make the final check to make sure the fuel is on and roll away.
