Primates

The primates that I chose to do my report on are the ruffled lemur, orangutan, and chimpanzee. The ruffled lemur’s suborder is prosimi; Superfamily: Loris idea; Family: cheirogaleidae; Genus and species: Varecia. Ruffled Lemurs are from Madagascar and live in the humid rain forest. They eat fruits, flowers, and leaves. They have pointed muzzle and large eyes and small ears. Lemurs have monkey like bodies and limbs and most have bushy tails about as long as the body. The fingers and toes have flat nails, except the second toe, which has a stout claw. Females do not carry their offspring on their stomachs or backs like most primates, but rather leave their litters in nests of leaves. Male lemurs are much wider than the female they have a larger head and lots of hair. Their length of body is 55cm and their tail is 60cm. They weigh 3.5-4.5kg and their coloration is varecia coats consists mainly of large patches of black and white fur, but the placement of these patches varies between populations. Ruffled lemurs breed during the months of May, June and July with infants born approximately 3 months later.

Ruffled lemurs are usually found in small groups of between 2 and 5 individuals. These groups are occasionally aggressive toward

The last primate is the chimpanzees which are great apes that live in western and central Africa. Chimpanzees have very long arms and a short body. They are covered with black hair on most of their body. They have a slight brow ridge, large ears, small nostrils, and an elongated snout. Chimpanzees have a hairless face except for a short, white beard in both male and female adults. Male chimps are larger than females. Female chimps weigh 57-110 lbs and male chimps weigh 90-115 lbs. Chimpanzees are omnivores. They eat leaves, fruit, seeds, tree bark, plant bulbs, tender plant shoots, and flowers. They also eat termites, ants, and small animals.

The second group of primates that I chose to do was the orangutans. Orangutans are large apes that live in Southeast Asia. These apes mostly live in trees and swing from branch to branch using their arms. Orangutans have a large, bulky body, a thick neck, very long arms, short legs, and no tail. They are mostly covered with long reddish-brown hair. Orangutans have a large head with prominent mouth area. Adult males have large cheek flaps that get larger as they age. Their hands are very much like ours; they have four long fingers plus an opposable thumb. Their feet have four long toes
