The cain mutiny
The Caine Mutiny is a fictional story set during world war two. The main characters in the movie are: Ensign William Keith, a recent Princeton graduate with three months of midshipman’s school, no navy training, from a privileged background. Naval reserve officer Lieutenant Steve Merrick, a family man doing his duty during wartime. He has been in the service since the beginning, about three years. He is the executive officer or second in command of the USS Caine. Tom Keffer, communications officer, a writer before the war. He hates the navy, the war, and anything that gets in his way of writing his novel. Lieutenant Commander Quieg sent to replace the captain of the caine. He is all navy, by the book, a career officer. Quieg has been in the navy for eight years. The story is about a mutiny on board a navy vessel at the end of world war two. It is also about the many different personalities on the ship and how each one played a role in bringing this about. By the end of the movie you’re not quite sure of the innocent, but you are very sure who is guilty. As a brand new officer in the navy, Mr. Keith is assigned to the caine. He arrives on board ship and is immediately appalled at the condition of both the ship and the crew
”Old yellow tail”, which the men, especially Keffer, refer to him by behind his back. Until this point in the story it seems pretty cut and dried. Quieg is crazy, they did what they had to do and they saved the ship. That isn’t the real story. Was Quieg really crazy? Or was he just a tired career navy officer walking on board an undisciplined ship, and being forced to go it alone. The support he needed was not there. He made some bad decisions. Is Merrick a mutineer or a sucker who listened to the wrong person and made a bad move? We know that Keith is just a young inexperienced officer who followed along. And then there is Keffer, a smart man, a writer, he hates the navy, he hates discipline, and he loves the sound of his own voice. He is also a coward. Was Quieg mentally ill or just made to look that way? The first on the stand is Keith. He explains what happened, he tells the court that they weren’t there so they don’t know how bad it was. Next on the stand is Keffer, he basically lied about everything. He claimed that he couldn’t judge if Quieg was sane or not because he wasn’t an expert. When asked if he believed if Merrick and Keith were justified in what they did he said no. He was a coward to the end! The Psychiatrist was next up. The prosecution asked if it was possible for a sane man to perform offensive or foolish acts. The doctor said “
