THE ILLICIT LOVE STORY “The Lady with the Pet Dog”, written by Anton Chekhov, is mainly based on love between Anna Sergeyevna and Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov. Have you ever fallen in love with a married person although you are married? The Lady with the Pet Dog is a kind of love story which tells the illicit relationship of two people who both have contrasts in their nature. In the opening section the author, Chekhov, firstly mentions about the protagonist Dmitry Gurov. Gurov is an attractive man from the upper class who is under forty years old. He has been trapped in a loveless marriage so he is always interested in other women. Thus not yet forty he has already become an experienced seducer. Because of the aversion against his wife and the remained bitter from his former affairs, his affairs always ends in a way he gets disappointed, he gets use to call women “The Inferior Race”. Despite saying this, he can’t stand without starting a new affair “which at first seems a light and charming adventure and then inevitably grows into a whole problem of complexity” and a disappointing end. At the end of the story the couple recreate a small secret island of happiness, and they believe that they have found true love. The Lady with the Pet Dog is an illicit love story of two people who are the creatures of contradictions. The story is different by the properties of its heroes, and just like most other Chekhov stories sadness and happiness lie together in this story. Returning to his daily routine in Moscow, Gurov seems to forget the things he lived in Yalta. And he again feels a longing for his former activities like going to the physicians’ club to play cards with a professor. This physicians’ club must be related to Chekhov’s life since Chekhov was also a physician. And then after a while, Gurov realizes that everything he lived in Yalta is still clear in his memory. The things they lived in Yalta glow more and more vividly and an unexpected thing happens if Gurov’s former life is thought. Gurov understands that he has fallen in love with Anna. As a result of that he recognizes that his life has two parts as external and internal. The external one, which is known by everybody, leaves him mostly irritated or bored. He mostly hates the vulgar male world he inhabits. And the internal one, which he can’t find any close friend to tell, seems so sincere to him.
