The Lady WÝth the Pet Dog


             THE ILLICIT LOVE STORY.
             "The Lady with the Pet Dog-, written by Anton Chekhov, is mainly based on love between Anna Sergeyevna and Dmitry Dmitrich Gurov. Have you ever fallen in love with a married person although you are married? The Lady with the Pet Dog is a kind of love story which tells the illicit relationship of two people who both have contrasts in their nature.
             In the opening section the author, Chekhov, firstly mentions about the protagonist Dmitry Gurov. Gurov is an attractive man from the upper class who is under forty years old. He has been trapped in a loveless marriage so he is always interested in other women. Thus not yet forty he has already become an experienced seducer. Because of the aversion against his wife and the remained bitter from his former affairs, his affairs always ends in a way he gets disappointed, he gets use to call women "The Inferior Race-. Despite saying this, he can't stand without starting a new affair "which at first seems a light and charming adventure and then inevitably grows into a whole problem of complexity- and a disappointing end. Chekhov narrates Gurov's low opinion about women, his adulteries, his drunkenness and his gambling. He presents Gurov in a mostly unfavorable character emphasizing his manipulation and amorality. .
             When Gurov is on holiday in Yalta, he sees a young lady with a pet dog, a white Pomeranian, trotting behind her. He tries to meet the young lady whose name is Anna Sergeyevna, the heroine of the story. She is an upper class married woman who comes Yalta for the first time. Although she is a quiet woman, she has contrasts in her nature just like Gurov. She wants to be honest and pure, but she also craves excitement and adventure and wants to experience more of life by saying -I wanted to live! To live, to live! -. Eventhough she wants to be honest she tells lie to her husband to meet Gurov in Moscow.
