World War I

Topic: Origins of World War Two

Why did the peace settlement after WW1 cause ill feeling between Germany and the Allies?

In what ways did relationship between European countries improve between 1924 and 1929?

After World War One, Germany had many reasons to have ill feeling for the allies. War reparations, territory lost, disarmament and war guilt were the main factors for the German hatred. But by 1924 things seemed to take a turn, treaties, agreements and pacts made Europeans countries trust and understand each other.

When World War One ended, Germany, the most powerful of the Axis, was made to sign the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles probably caused more ill feeling between Germany and the Allies than anything else because the German thought it was much too harsh. The treaty included reparations, disarmament, territory lost and war guilt. The terms of the treaty were worked out in secret and forced upon the Germans; they had no say and were forced to sign the treaty. The Germans eventually signed in June 1919 when Germany had lost the war.

The Reparations were 6.6 million pounds to go to the cost of the war. The Germans thought this was much too harsh and Herr Schneidermann, of Germany, made

Germany was to reduce to a 100 000 men army, six battleships, no submarines, air force nor tanks. If Germany followed these rules, it would make them impossible to attack and win against neighboring countries. Further more, if Germany was attacked, it would be hard for her to defend herself. The Berliner Tageblatt from Germany said “The terms mean the end of Germany as a great power….The military terms are impossible.” That sums up most German peoples reaction to this disarmament, the Germans hated to disarm with no guarantee that their Allied neighbors would do so likewise. The Germans were scared that the treaty left Germany nearly defenseless and above all, Germany hated to have to disarm and have neighboring countries having a strong, ready to battle force.

After World War One, the peace settlement caused ill feelings between Germany and the Allies was mainly because of the Treaty of Versailles. Since the terms were worked out in secret and forced upon the Germans, they wanted to appeal but couldn’t. In the eye’s of a German, the reparations, territory lost, disarmament and war guilt would have been way too harsh and almost too much to take after suffering from the effects of war. The German morale would have been crushed and would have followed anyone to look up to and offer them employment and work. By 1924, things started to take a turn and there was new hope for the European people. The pacts and treaties such as the Locarno Pact, The Kellogg-Briand Pact, The young Plan and the Dawes Plan helped the Europeans work and understand each other. Historians have sometimes called the period 1924 to 1929 an era of hope; a time when Europe seemed to be settling most of its problems.

The Germans hated for being blamed for the war. In the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was made to sign a statement that Germany alone was guilty of starting the First World War. The morale of the country was down at being blamed for the war, many pe
