On February 6, 1945, reggae’s most incomparable and iconic figure, Bob Marley, was born. He was the first Jamaican artist to surmount international superstardom, while bringing forward the music of his native Island Nation and his home of Nine Miles in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica. Bob Marley’s music were songs of faith, devotion, love, and revolution that influenced and inspired his listeners, and created a legacy which continues through variations of music today. Bob Marley spoke to a variety of people, not only Rastafarian. Some people can truly connect with his music and feel an inner peace. Bob Marley was a very gifted artist, and perhaps “otherworldly” so. It’s quite distinct that Bob Marley was, and still is, although he is deceased, one of the most influential artists of all time. Even teenagers of today look up to him and are still inspired by his music. There was a calmness about him, and he was such a free spirit, that everyone loved and appreciated him, and his moving lyrics and teachings could even go as far as inspiring one’s personal and spiritual growth. Bob Marley gained a very diverse group of fans, most of which find it impossible to dislike him, while others look at him in a different perspective and dislike what they saw. Many people dislike Bob Marley because of his heavy usage of marijuana, and refused to look past that and see his genius writing ability and the true messages he was portraying. There was also a large misconception that all Bob Marley’s music was promoting drug use, or when his name was mentioned, it was linked with marijuana use, but that is very far from what he stood for. His usage of marijuana reflected his Rastafarian beliefs, and also was referred to in number of his songs. Bob Marley was just expressing himself the only way he could, by being himself, and he wasn’t willing to hide or change his beliefs or what he wanted to gain fans.
