In the movie Jack is supposed to represent the average person who was become dependent on his society and addicted to the vision of a “perfect” life. He spends an incredible amount of time and money on buying things that he doesn’t need. Some of the movie’s easier to understand messages come from his way of living. Tyler is Jack’s “imaginary” friend, and one of the main characters in which most messages stem from. Tyler is a perfect example of a metaphor played out through the whole movie.

Most people can’t get past him being a person to see the meaning behind him. Tyler’s character is Jack’s vision of what he thinks the ideal person is. Everything that Tyler does is either imagined by Jack, or is Jack himself doing it and imagining he is watching Tyler do it. To people in the real world Tyler is almost the same thing, he represents the person that they want to be. The ideal you, flawless and everything you want in yourself. To most this vision never becomes an actual person that we talk to but stays as a thought or idea of what we want. Tyler has many words of wisdom, some of which are said to Jack, and some are said straight to the camera. An example of this is in two different cases in which Tyler is expressing the same message. The first examples was stated directly to the camera and shows a great technique that the director used to reach the audience that would have trouble understanding the whole movie. Tyler said, “You’re not the contains of your wallet you’re not the car you drive, not the size of your bank account, you’re not your khakis.” The next thing he says is a little harder to understand and is found in a conversation between him and Jack about life. He says, “We’re consumers. We’re by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty – these things don’t concern me. What concerns me is celebrity magazines, television with five hundred channels, some guy’s name on my underwear,” then later goes on to say, “The things you own end up owning you.” The message stated here is repeated many times throughout the movie, to not let material objects rule your life.
