The question of our existence in reality have been dwelling for years among philosophers. However non is more notable, in terms of knowledge on this matter, than Rene Descartes. The phrase “I think therefore I am” is the spirit and soul of Descartes philosophy on human existence. Furthermore, Descartes put forth a distinct method of doubting to determine whether certain knowledge is indubitable or not. Descartes’ divergent thinking left many philosophers questioning how reliable his method actually was. Among them was a man named Elliot Sober who believed that some of Descartes’ arguments were trapped in the Cartesian Circle. Nonetheless, both philosophers were trying to boil down to one thing: to discover an unblemished system to establishing the foundation of true knowledge. In order to understand Rene Descartes’ philosophy one must recognize how he came across his conclusion. At some point of Descartes’ life he realized that a solid foundation was much needed in order for knowledge to be absolutely true. Much like in architecture, a stable foundation is needed for a building to be secure and safe. Descartes was trying to recognize what foundational knowledge he had were indubitable but realized that he had c
Knowledge is the driving force for learning; without knowledge life would be dull and boring. Furthermore, curiosity is an inevitable trait within human nature and knowledge is much needed to feed our desires and aspirations. However, the meaning to knowing something can be and usually is misleading. There are three basic forms of knowledge. First, there is the acquaintance knowledge and that is knowing someone or some place. For example, Jose may say and probably do know who Michael Jackson is; however, the only reason why he knows Michael Jackson is because he saw him on television, not because he know him personally. It is possible to know a great deal about someone with out having ever to meet them. The same situation can happen for knowledge about certain places. If Jose said he knows a lot about Hawaii and have seen it, he may be saying he had read plenty of articles on Hawaii and have seen numerous pictures of the place. Second, there is the ability knowledge and it means having the ability to perform a certain task. It could be the ability to play the guitar or the piano or whatever. Usually people are relatively honest when it comes to ability knowledge since it cannot be proven unless you actually perform the task. Last but not least, there is the propositional knowledge which is the most misleading of them all primarily because it is frequently used. There are three conditions for one to have a certain propositional knowledge. First, the proposition must be true. For instance, if Jose said he knows that Michael Jackson was a singer then he must be a singer because if this was not true then Jose could not have said he know Michael Jackson is a singer. One cannot know something that is not true unless they have been deceived or they are lying. Secondly, one must believe in the proposition. If Jose did not believe that Michael Jackson was a singer then he would not have said he know Michael Jackson as singer. One cannot be taken seriously if one say, “It is true but I sincerely don’t believe it.” Finally, one require evidence that the proposition is true. This, however, may cause some problem because there is no universal rule for how much evidence is needed. Then again, it is next to impossible to
