The struggle between Jack and Tyler was within one man who could not decide between his good and his bad. Jack believes that his conscious thought is good and his subconscious, which was Tyler, is bad. At the end of the movie Jack exorcises Tyler and returns to just being regular Jack. The challenge of whether to follow the path that is set by society or follow the path that brings happiness is throughout the movie.
