Theme of Short Stories

A theme that is covered in various stories is the theme that even if people appear happy on the outside, on the inside there is almost always some sorrow either hidden deep in their heart and soul or being shown to people of the world. There are many different types of sorrow shown or hidden in many different ways in multiple stories, and is sometimes overcome.

A Secret Sorrow is a story about a woman, Faye, who is sorrowful that she cannot have children. She hides this from her boyfriend Kai at first by telling him she loves him but cannot marry him, and has not “given a satisfactory reason and I’ll {Kai} be damned if I’m going to accept your lack of explanations.” This sentence also shows that Kai has sorrow over Faye not marrying him. She is sorrowful also because she thinks that when she tells him that “you wouldn’t want me anymore” and that “you’ll be disappointed.” When she tells him she cannot have children “her voice was an agonized cry, torn from the depths of her misery.” They worked out the problem and got married and adopted children and she found that “there was love in his embrace and love in his words and in her heart there was no room now for doubt, no room for sorrow.” Faye and Kai

Many people in many walks of life face sorrow in some aspect or another. Even if people appear happy and lively on the outside, or even just content, there is often an element of sorrow in the underlying current.

overcome their sorrow to live wonderful lives.

Miss Brill is sorrowful because of what the teenagers say about her: “the stupid old thing at the end down there… why does she keep coming here… who wants her… why doesn’t she keep her silly old mug at home… be off with you,” and because of what they say about the fox that she is so fond of: “its her fur which is so funny… its exactly like fried whiting.” Mrs. Brill hides her sorrow from this young couple by getting up and leaving. Her sorrow is evidenced to those that know her and know her habits because “on her way home she usually bought a slice of honey-cake at the baker’s. It was her Sunday treat… but today she passed the baker’s by, climbed the stairs, went into the little dark room… and sat down on her eiderdown.” She doesn’t let anyone else know that she’s sorrowful she just goes to her room to be by herself. She takes her fur off and puts it back in the box… but Mrs. Brill is so sorrowful she cries, “when she put the lid on she thought she heard someone crying,” and she didn’t realize it was herself. She can easily overcome her sorrow, but it might take some time.

In The Answer Is No the woman is sorrowful because she can never get married and have children, at least in her eyes. She is sorrowful because Badran stole something from her that she can never get back… her innocence. When she was 13, close to 14 he basically rapes her. She is so innocent and naïve that she does not even know what happened which is shown because “she had aske
